America @ 250: A Jewish Guide to the Super Bowl

By Team Simchat Torah Challenge
America @ 250: A Jewish Guide to the Super Bowl

You may have heard: the United States of America is in party mode this year. Semiquincentennial? Bisesquicentennial? Let's just call it a big birthday. And we at the Simchat Torah Challenge are excited to celebrate. Because it's an opportunity to show how central Torah is to the American story, from this country’s inception till today.

There's no better way to start this story than with the most American of days: the Super Bowl.

It's cliche, but true, that the Super Bowl is basically an American religious experience. Once a year, everyone is welcome, with citizens from across political aisles and religious creeds unified, as fanatical about their teams as they are about the ads and halftime shows.

We want to add to these festivities, bringing a little Torah wisdom to make your Super Bowl Sunday a bit more meaningful.

In our America @ 250: Jewish Guide to the Super Bowl reader, you'll find:

  • An essay by Rabbi Stuart Halpern about the connection between Jews and football's chain-movers, those who make the game possible

  • A fun Super Bowl Tzedakah game to keep the whole family in the game of giving for good

  • Savory tailgate-approved recipes for two reimagined Super Bowl staples—wings and nachos—from Chanie Apfelbaum @busyinbrooklyn
